Willem Klein Associate | Washington, D.C.
The son of both an attorney and a civil engineer, working in intellectual property protection seemed like an obvious choice for Willem. The crossroads between taking ideas from concept to completion, and then further securing those ideas for the inventor is exactly where he wants to stand. Willem uses the skills learned over a lifetime to develop intellectual property solutions for clients that take into account both their scientific and their business needs.
Willem worked extensively in software development before joining RP. He developed data processing solutions at Standard & Poors for several years, and designed bespoke analytics and reporting solutions for The Carlyle Group. He is proficient with proper software development principles and methodologies, as well as financial reporting and analysis.
His legal career began at RP as a Summer Associate. During this time, he drafted several provisional patent applications based on inventor materials and disclosure conversations. He continued working with the firm during his last year of law school, improving his drafting skill and efficiency.
As an associate, Willem helps draft effective patent applications; assist in prosecuting these applications through the U.S. Patent and Trademark office; aid in the defense of clients’ intellectual property through litigation; and evaluate relevant court decisions, statutes, regulations, and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office guidelines to improve strategies for patent prosecution and litigation.
