Mr. Rothe has practiced intellectual property (IP) law since 2000, helping a variety of clients with IP issues involving mechanical and biomedical technology.  He focuses much of his practice on helping clients with IP strategic planning, including patent portfolio planning and risk management.  Mr. Rothe is also responsible for prosecuting patent applications for clients, both in the U.S. and internationally.  He is currently responsible for managing substantial patent portfolios for a major U.S. manufacturer of surgical implants and one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals.
 
Mr. Rothe has worked with a number of different clients and is accustomed to explaining IP issues to individuals with various professional backgrounds.  He has advised general counsels, company presidents, R&D directors, marketing directors, engineers, scientists and independent inventors having no prior IP experience.  Regardless of the client’s background, Mr. Rothe follows the same philosophy in his practice.  This philosophy includes understanding the client’s business, discussing the client’s expectations, and selecting the best strategy to satisfy those expectations.
 
Mr. Rothe’s practice at RatnerPrestia is built upon several years of technical and legal experience.  Prior to joining RatnerPrestia, Mr. Rothe worked at an IP firm in Philadelphia, developing a broad-based experience in patent prosecution, trademark prosecution, trademark litigation, copyrights and trade secrets.  Before attending law school, Mr. Rothe spent four years working as an environmental engineer in private practice.  Mr. Rothe received his Juris Doctorate degree from Villanova University School of Law, and a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.  He is currently a member of the American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association, Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.  Mr. Rothe has written articles on various intellectual property issues in publications serving the legal and engineering professions, and is currently the editor of RatnerPrestia’s Insight® newsletter.
